Please reach us at info@relyoninterpretation.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.
The short answer is no. Though both are linguists, translators are trained to translate written text from one language to another. Interpreters are trained to interpret (not translate) spoken speech. They convey a speaker's message in another language.
Interpreters use several types of interpreting techniques: consecutive, simultaneous or chuchotage.
Consecutive is the mode in which the interpreter takes notes while the speaker is active and intervenes once the speaker is done talking. Since interpreters cannot take notes for extended periods, the speaker has to pause every five minutes or so, to allow the interpreter to deliver their interpretation. This mode is best suited for press conferences, interviews, site inspections, amongst others.
Simultaneous is the mode in which the interpreter listens to the speaker and speaks at the same time in the target language, having a very slight delay. This allows the speakers to speak without having to pause and participants to follow what's being said, in real time.
Technical equipment is needed for this mode, such as a soundproof booth or a portable device in case of events requiring the speaker and participants to move from room to room (plant or site inspections, for example).
From the French verb "chuchoter" which means "to whisper".
In this mode, the interpreter works for only one person or a small group of people and interprets simultaneously without equipment: the interpreter whispers to them. This mode is generally used for bilateral talks.
